According to CBS News, Los Angeles is painting some of its streets white and the reasoning is pretty cool! LA is attempting to fight climate change by painting streets grayish-white with CoolSeal. CoolSeal is made by a company called GuardTop, and it helps to reflect solar rays off asphalt so that less heat is actually absorbed. According to the Bureau of Street Services, LA streets currently covered with CoolSeal are 10 to 15 degrees cooler on average than the LA streets that have not. This will keep the LA neighborhoods from heating up quite as much. Plus, buildings in the area don't need to use quite as much air conditioning, which can cut costs, saving residents' money and saving the environment! According to CBS News, the project is expensive with LA reportedly spending $40,000 for every mile it "paints."
